I’m Just Laying Around Contemplating Next Years Tour Winner

After a very long weekend it’s nice to have a day off. Today I am just laying down and just relaxing! Seriously, I trashed myself this weekend, so this day will be all about maximum recovery efficiency.

While I was lying down, I happened to notice that Chris Froome had just won Romandie, which is pretty awesome to me. Froome has now won the tour of Oman and the Criterium International this year already. So you can imagine why VeloNews is calling him the man to beat at the tour. [Below is one of my favorite Froome videos.]

In my opinion, Sky had a really tough call this year for team captain for the tour. They were in a toss-up between giving Bradley Wiggins a chance to defend his title or to let Froome give it a go. With Wiggins heading over to the Giro this year I think the team captain for the Tour is obviously going to be Froome, but why Froome over Wiggins? Chris-Froome

If you had watched the Tour last year I think you could tell that Wiggins wasn’t the best climber there. In fact, Froome showed he was the better climber almost very single time they hot the mountains. Yet Wiggins was a better TT’r than Froome, but then again Froome would always be right on the heels of Wiggins in the TT.

So really if you think about it last year there was a ton of explosive climbers that were absent for the tour. For example: Ryder Hesjadel, Joaquim Rodriguez, Alberto Contador, and Andy Schleck were all MIA. Think about it, if these riders would have shown up for the Tour we might be looking at a different winner. No doubt though that Wiggins was made for the 2012 tour. But the question is whether the Tour will ever suit him again?

There is no doubt in my mind that Chris Froome is the better rounded GC rider than Wiggins. For example; at last year’s Tour what Wiggins would put on Froome in the time trial, Froome could put three times the time in the mountains back on Wiggins if he was let loose. So I think Sky knows what they are doing. Which is to send Wiggins over to the Giro, a Giro that will better suit him because of the long individual time trials, and then they send Froome to the Tour with its long mountainous stages. Anyway, that’s what I am stewing on today.

As for the rest of this week I will be trying to recover in time to go give the Tall Grass Road Race a go, which will be the only race I will be racing this weekend.
