After a very early two hour car trip to Manhattan, Kansas we finally arrived for the Pro/1/2/3 Road Race. Little did I know that for the next 87 miles it would be hell on earth. No joke the second we started we were on a part of the course where you were going into a 20+mph head wind for about 45 minutes. At about mile six a group of eight guys including me ripped off the front of the peloton because of attacks and the 20+ mph head wind. So for the next 80 more miles it would turn out to be a very hard break away.
The thing that really was picking the group apart was that we were to do 3 laps of the course and each lap we would hit the head wind section of the course and it would take us at least 45 minutes to get through it. Then once we got through it I would have to spin my lights out to try and stay with the group of guys on the downhill section with the wind at our backs. After the second lap I was pretty darn tired and was trying to stay out of the wind as much as possible but when it came down to it I just didn’t have that much left in the tank.
So for the day I finished up 7th but I am pretty happy with the result. I really should have eaten more during the race but I was having trouble eating with the wind and the group constantly attacking one another. But that’s racing whether you like it or not.
After the race me and my parents headed over to Olive Garden for a quick bite. Then we went and checked out one of my moms friends house that was like 180 years old and I have to say it was very cool. It certainly was an interesting house for sure completely made out of stone with 3 foot thick walls and some of the coolest wood beams, and floors you have ever seen. The hardware on the doors came from some civil way fort and the door which was 8 inches thick was made out of some old bridge.
As for the rest of the evening, its around 8:15 so I will be laying down for the rest of the night and just relaxing. Tomorrow I will be doing a four hour ride, should be good fun.
