As I mentioned yesterday, I was not happy with my first ride at Mars Hill and it was probably due to 24 hours of travel and a full day off before hitting it at altitude for the first time, but I knew after I was able to blow my lungs out that I would be good today.
To be honest, yesterday was just weird. I got to the top of the climb and my legs were fine, but my arms hurt and I was unusually out of breath. The only thing I can chalk it up to is travel and altitude since that’s just not normal for me.
So that’s what went down today at Snow Bowl. We had a 4.5 mile climb with an average grade around 5-6% with little pitches around 8% here and there. I ended up big ringing it and was able to put some serious time on the other guys. My total time was 14:53 which got me a 1st place finish today.
It was definitely redemption for what I thought was an awful time on my bike yesterday and from my stand point was really just plain awful, but not today, I was back to my old self and ready to go.
I also learned today that you can easily overheat your tires when coming down a mountain pass at high speed when you are lightly using your brakes to keep a steady speed with a pack of riders on carbon wheels. I ended up blowing out my tire about 3/4 of the way down at high speed, but was able to keep myself up right. That would have sucked to have won the climb only to get knocked out of camp due to a freak accident.
Tomorrow, we are doing 5k TT Repeats in the morning and then after lunch we will be crit racing. The goal is a podium tomorrow and anything less will just be uncivilized.
